mr's Preposter.us Blog

I’ve spent a few hours this evening with Apple’s cheapest Mac and I’m happy to say that so far there’s been no surprises; it’s pretty much just like the far more expensive MacBook I use every day at work.

I haven’t used it extensively yet, but I have had a chance to try most of the things I do on a daily basis with it and so far it seems more than up to the task.  Basic writing, programming, CAD/CAM, etc. all seem to work about the same as they do on the Framework laptop I’ve been using as a personal computer for around a year.  Really the only thing that pushed the Framework to its limit has been slicing very large 3D models for printing on the Orangestorm Giga, so it will be interesting to see how the cheap MacBook handles tasks like that.

Also, the email client has spell check.

I don’t plan to write a lot about this computer as part of an overall effort of mine to stop focusing on computers themselves for awhile (I’ll get more into that in a future post), but I’ll probably write a more detailed “long-term review” after I’ve used it for a few months and really get a chance to see how it holds-up.

In the meantime here’s a photo from the Horicon Marsh.
