mr's Preposter.us Blog

One of the props we’re making for Halloween this year is a life-size carbonite block like the one Han Solo was frozen in at Cloud City in “The Empire Strikes Back”.

Along the sides of this block are several boxes with control panels for monitoring the subject and other unexplained things.

Jamie sketched-up some designs for these based on screenshots from the movie and other licensed toys and props.  I created a general model for them in OpenSCAD.

We dug-out a pile of bits from the parts bin, and I printed one of the covers so Jamie could experiment with laying things out.

There’s eight control panels in all, so this took awhile and I documented the behavior of each in a markdown document.

The next step will be to start experimenting with making them work.  Once I’ve settled on the electronics we’ll take another pass at tweaking the printed parts to provide mounting and other support for the electronics, and then start putting individual boxes together.
